Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award – Belong LearningWe are delighted to run the bronze Duke of Edingburgh (DofE) award at ECSfG this year, an extracurricular activity that is widely recognised as the world's leading youth achievement award.

The Duke of Edinburgh award complements academic attainment and equips students with essential life skills that will serve them well as they make their way towards the next step in their education and employment.

Students complete their bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award by completing a bespoke programme of activities based on four areas of personal development:

  • Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community.
  • Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities.
  • Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests.
  • Expedition: planning, training for and completion of an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad.

Bronze DofE at ECSfG

  • Students complete a two day expedition, one night camp, including six hours of walking each day.
  • Students decide on their expedition 'focus' eg researching an area of interest, contributing to a community action project or developing interpersonal skills.
  • Students camp overnight and learn basic bush craft skills.
  • Preparations include route planning to include checkpoints, map reading and learning how to use a compass. This is an electronic detox: NO PHONES ALLOWED!
  • Students learn health safety procedures and how to administer basic first aid.
  • Students spend three months volunteering in a field that personally enthuses them eg. Girl Guides, animal sanctuary, food banks.
  • Students learn a new skill eg photography, a new language, debating skills.
  • Students complete physical tasks (netball, running, rock climbing etc.).
