Dear Parent / Carer

Introduction of Cashless Payment System

I am writing in response to your request for information for Parents/Carers who cannot access the Internet or who do not have a debit/credit card.

Having spoken to the Local Authority their advice is that parents use a PayPoint card, and this can be obtained from the school office free of charge. The card can then be ‘topped up’ at any convenient store that offers the service. A full list of local stores can be found at www.paypoint.co.uk/locator.htm  but the nearest stores to our school are:

Co-op Bush Hill Park
3-7 Leighton Road
Enfield EN1 1XH
  Budgens
70-72 Lancaster Road
Enfield EN2 0BX

Co-op Lancaster Road
102-104 Lancaster Road
Enfield EN2 0JW
  Co-op Lavender Hill
120a Lavender Hill
Enfield EN2 0QU

The first card will be provided free of charge but replacement cards will incur a charge of £2.00. Please also note that replacement payment cards can take up to two weeks to arrive, although we will endeavour to help parents/carers make payments during this time.

If you wish for your daughter to be provided with an initial PayPoint card, please contact the school office on 020 8363 3030 (Upper School) or 020 8363 9934 (Lower School) and register the student’s name and form to activate the service.

Yours sincerely

Dear Parent / Carer

Cashless Payment System Up-date

Further to my initial letter of June 2010 I am writing to inform you that arrangements for the introduction of the Cashless Payment System for school meals are progressing well. We therefore expect to be on target to go ‘cashless’ as from September although for the first few days cash will be necessary until parental passwords are issued and accounts set up.

We are now at the stage where the biometric templates are being recorded by the London Borough of Enfield’s Education Catering Service. This will be on-going over the next few days and in September for any absentees, year 12 returners and the new Year 7 students.

It has been reassuring to hear from parents of Year 6 students, during our recent induction days, that their experiences of the cashless system at primary school have been very positive. We therefore hope that all will go well in September over the transitional period.

In the meantime I wish you and your family a restful and enjoyable summer break.

Yours sincerely

Dear Parent / Carer

Enfield Science and Technology Challenge

I am writing to firstly congratulate you again on the achievement of your daughter’s project entry at the Enfield Science and Technology Challenge earlier on this half term and secondly to offer more information about displaying this project at the Big Bang Fair in London on Tuesday 13 July 2010.
Following the success of Enfield County’s entries at the Enfield Science Challenge we have been invited to display our entries at the Big Bang Fair held at the Westminster Kingsway College.

The Big Bang aims to excite, educate, stimulate and enthuse young people about opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics,(STEM) inspiring them to follow careers in this rewarding field. It is led by Engineering and developed in partnership with The British Science Association and Young Engineers with support from over 70 organisations from business and industry, government and the STEM community.
The focus of the day is on directly engaging pupils with STEM through hands-on activities, exciting demonstrations and inspiring interaction. As well as displays from industry and universities there will be presentations of science and engineering projects created by London pupils.
The pupils will need to attend school in full school uniform on the day and come to reception at the Upper School for 8.30am. They will not need to pay for this visit, so please do not carry large amounts of money or anything else valuable. The pupils should also bring drinks and a packed lunch with them for the day as we will not be able to purchase anything to eat on site. The pupils will return to the Upper School, Holly Walk, at around 4.30pm.
This is a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to represent their school and showcase their projects and I hope that they will thoroughly enjoy and be inspired by this trip.

Yours sincerely

Dear Parent / Carer

Year 8 Profile for Academic Year 2009/10

We are pleased to enclose your daughter’s Profile for Year 8, so that we can track a student’s progress more closely, the current attainment level that has been awarded has been divided into three as explained below:

a indicates that a student is working well within the level and is on the threshold of achieving the next level up.

b indicates a student is working safely within the level

c indicates that a student is just working within the level

The National Curriculum standards have been designed so that a ‘typical’ student will move up one level every two years. This means that by the end of Key Stage 3 (end of Year 9) any student who has achieved Level 5 or 6 has therefore reached the standard of the typical student mentioned above. Year 9 students who have reached or exceeded Level 7 are performing exceptionally for their age. Please bear in mind when you look at your daughter’s levels that she is still currently only in Year 8 and the target levels mentioned above are for Year 9.

Effort Levels

1 }
2 } 1 being the highest and 4 being the lowest
3 }
4 }

Targets or areas for improvement – Targets or areas for improvement have also been included to support your daughter in the best way forward for each individual subject.

Pastoral Comment – The Profile includes a comment by your daughter’s Form Tutor alongside her attendance and punctuality record for the year. Research has demonstrated the clear link between consistent effort and good attendance through all of the school years and success in examinations.

Please would you sign and complete the slip below acknowledging receipt of your daughter’s profile. If you have any points that you wish to raise about your daughter’s profile, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Willett and she will arrange to discuss any concerns with you.

Dear Parent / Carer

Sports Day Monday 5 July 2010 at Lea Valley Athletics Stadium

I am writing to inform you about the arrangements for our annual Sports Day which as last year will be taking place Lee Valley Athletics Stadium, Pickett’s Lock Lane, Edmonton N9 0AS.

Arrangements for the day are as follows:

• Students make their own way directly to the stadium for 8.30am registration
• The Stadium can be accessed by the W8 bus which terminates at the venue however we would encourage Parents/Carers to drop off and pick up their daughters (perhaps car share) as much as possible as there is ample car parking directly outside the stadium
• Students to travel in suitable non uniform for sitting on the grass unless competing in which case they must wear school PE kit (Years 7, 8, 9 and 10) year 12 students who are competing should wear appropriate sports clothing without large logos
• Students will be dismissed from the stadium to go home at the end of the last race. This dismissal will be staggered from any time after 12.30pm depending on the timing of the last race
• Students are asked not to bring any valuables as they cannot be collected in
• There will be no refreshments available for sale at the stadium and so students are advised to bring snacks with them and plenty to drink in case it is a hot day
• The PE Department would encourage all competitors and spectators to bring sun tan cream with them (this may be best arranged with friends as it is costly), a plain hat/cap and waterproofs/umbrellas and something waterproof to sit on
• Registers will also be taken at the end of the day before students are dismissed
• Parents are welcome to attend but please remember that there will be no seating although there is plenty of space on the grass banks around the stadium. Unfortunately due to the nature of the event we are unable to accommodate unaccompanied young people

Sports Day has always been such a pleasant occasion and is one of those few times when Upper and Lower Schools come together. Last year we spent a pleasant morning at what was then a new venue for us but a much superior one in terms of facilities and accommodation for both. I therefore look forward to seeing you there.

Thanking you in advance for your co-operation.

Yours sincerely

June 2010

Dear Parent / Carer

Introduction of Cashless Payment System

I am writing to inform you that the Council has been implementing a cashless payment system in Enfield schools and our school will be taking part in this initiative from 2 September 2010. There are several advantages to this system such as students will no longer need to bring cash into school to pay for lunch and Free School Meal students will not be identified to others as they will access their meals in exactly the same way as paying students. May I also reassure you that the systems used by the council are totally secure with regard to any information stored and the staff using the information are fully checked at the Criminal Records Bureau for their suitability to work with children.

Your daughter’s photo and biometric reading identification will be recorded onto the system to be used by the schools caterer (London Borough of Enfield’s Education Catering Service). Please note that this is not a fingerprint image but a subset of the unique features of the thumb which are extracted from a scanned image and converted into a biometric ‘template’, like a barcode. This template is checked against a template generated each time a student places their thumb on the scanner to purchase their school mean.

Parents will use the internet to access their own ParentPay account. This means that you will:-

• Use a credit card or debit card to pay for school meals in one transaction for the children that you have at Enfield County School. This will be done by logging on to an on-line payments system called ParentPay, which can be found at   www.parentpay.com  using your personal ID (to be issued in July), which is password protected. ParentPay have a Demo available that you can look at now to get used to the system before it goes ‘live’ at Enfield County.

• No longer have to send cash into school to pay for your child’s school meals

• Be informed of the minimum payment amount recommended which will be £10

• You will be able to log-on to  www.parentpay.com  and view your daughter’s meal choice.

• For parents who cannot access the Internet or do not have a debit or credit card, please contact Paul Wilmot, Bursar on 020 8363 3030 for alternative arrangements.

NB: for parents of children eligible for free school meals, you will:-

• Have a ParentPay account and the Council will credit the account each day with the cash value for a free school meal

• Be able to top up the ParentPay account in the same way as everyone else if you wish to provide additional money for snacks and drinks

This is an initial letter to raise awareness that Enfield County will be starting this cashless payment system in September and so we will be writing again with further details. Also, we would hope that other payments to the school e.g. school trips can also be paid for via ParentPay and so avoid the need for our students to bring money into school at all.

In the meantime, we have attached a FAQ form which we hope will answer any concerns you might have and would ask that you take the opportunity to go online to ParentPay and look at their self explanation parental demo.

Yours sincerely

Study Leave for Year 10 Examinations

As you are aware there are three GCSE Science exams this month. The first of these is the Biology Unit which is tomorrow (Wednesday 9th June, pm). The second is Chemistry (Wednesday 16th June, am) and the last is Physics (Thursday 24th June, pm).

It is usual for girls to be dismissed from school at the end of public exams. Therefore on the 9th and 24th June students will be dismissed after 2.00pm.

We have asked students to go straight home and not to remain in town. If you would like your daughter to remain in school there is provision made for her in the Library.

I wish your daughter every success.

Yours sincerely

Induction Day for 7Y – Tuesday 13 July 2010

I am delighted to invite your daughter to her Induction Day here at Enfield County School. This will give your daughter the opportunity to meet her new class and take part in a variety of activities. These will include a project in ICT and games.

You will need to bring your daughter to the Lower School in Rosemary Avenue at 9.00am. Parents are invited to stay for the introduction to the day by Ms Rutherford the Headteacher. This will last about half an hour.

Your daughter should wear comfortable clothing and will not need to bring anything with her apart from a packed lunch or £2.20 for school dinner.

There will be an opportunity to meet representatives of our PTA ‘The Friends of Enfield County School’. They will be selling packs of exercise book covers at £10.00 each, but parents must feel under no obligation to buy as the object of the visit is to become familiar with and be welcomed into the school community – not to spend money – although support of our fund-raising activities is always appreciated.

The day will end at 3.00pm.

I very much look forward to meeting you and your daughter at the beginning of what I hope will be a happy and successful time at Enfield County School.

Yours sincerely

Dear Parent / Carer

Year 7 Profile for Academic Year 2009/10

We are pleased to enclose your daughter’s Profile for Year 7, so that we can track a student’s progress more closely, the current attainment level that has been awarded has been divided into three as explained below:

a: indicates that student is achieving well within the grade and is on the threshold of achieving the next grade up

b: indicates a student is working safely within the grade

c: indicates that a student is just working within the grade

The National Curriculum standards have been designed so that a ‘typical’ student will move up one level every two years. This means that by the end of Key Stage 3 (end of Year 9) any students who has achieved Level 5 or 6 has therefore reached the standard of the typical student mentioned above. Year 9 students who have reached or exceeded Level 7 are performing exceptionally for their age. Please bear in mind when you look at your daughter’s levels that she is still currently only in Year 7 and the target levels mentioned above are for Year 9.

Effort Levels

1 }
2 } 1 being the highest and 4 being the lowest
3 }
4 }

If you have any points that you wish to raise about your daughter’s profile, please do not hesitate to contact Ms Scott and she will arrange to discuss any concerns with you.

Year 10 Profile for Academic Year 2009/10

We are pleased to enclose your daughter’s Profile for Year 10. The following information may be helpful for you when you read the Profile:

Estimated Grades

So that we can track a student’s progress more closely, the current estimated grade (the grade that we think they will achieve based on their current performance) has been divided into three as explained below:

1: indicates that student is achieving well within the grade and is on the threshold of achieving the next grade up

2: indicates a student is working safely within the grade

3: indicates that a student is just working within the grade

tbc: to be confirmed

Examples – If a student has an estimated grade of C3 she has just achieved a grade C. She should work hard in order that she does not drop down to a grade D. If a student has been awarded a C1, she is on the threshold of grade C and B and should be working towards achieving a grade B.

Please note that for ICT and Health and Social Care the grades are as follows:

P: Pass
M: Merit
D: Distinction

Effort Levels

1 }
2 } 1 being the highest and 4 being the lowest

Dear Parent / Carer

I am writing to inform you that we will soon be ‘rolling over’ our timetable. This will mean that our girls will become Year 8 and will begin their Year 8 courses on 14 June 2010.

This will be the fifth year that we have ‘rolled over’ our timetable in June rather than in September and we have seen very real benefits in doing so. Firstly, the additional curriculum time that is spent on GCSE coursework has been extremely valuable and has raised the achievement of all of our students in KS4. We believe that our Year 9 students are ready to begin studying for their GCSE options in June after all of the Key Stage 3 assessment has taken place.

Secondly, being a split site school, our upper school site is vacated by our Year 11 and Year 13 students and it therefore makes sense to rebalance our students, leaving Rosemary Avenue a more spacious and comfortable environment during the hot Summer weeks. Lastly, in September, our students resume programmes of study immediately being settled and fully aware of the demands and requirements of their courses.

Year 7 seems to have flown by and I find myself now looking forward to taking the girls into Year 8 within a matter of weeks! In this time I have seen the girls grow and mature both academically and socially. They are a bright and able year group and have worked very hard.

As you are aware towards the end of May we are visiting Legoland and then in September we have our residential visit for the whole year group to Kingswood Centre, Ashford. I look forward to all these events and continuing to build on the success of Year 7 when the students enter Year 8.

Yours sincerely

There will be a lot of new opportunities for our girls to look forward to in the coming year including our Paris trip, their role as prefects and peer mentors as well as being positive role models for the new Year 7’s who arrive in September. Year 9 is also the year where the girls are required to begin thinking about options for GCSEs and I am confident that all the hard work already done will stand them in good stead for the future.

The time has flown by over the last 2 years and I am sure that you will agree that the girls have developed tremendously both academically and socially and they are blossoming into beautiful young women with great potential. I look forward to working with you and building on the success of this excellent Year group.

Yours sincerely

Dear Parent / Carer

I am writing to inform you that we will soon be ‘rolling over’ our timetable. This will mean that our girls will move up to Holly Walk to begin their Year 10 GCSE courses on 14 June 2010.

Secondly, being a split site school, our upper school site is vacated by our Year 11, and Year 13 students and it therefore makes sense to rebalance our students, leaving Rosemary Avenue a more spacious and comfortable environment during the hot Summer weeks. Lastly, in September, our students resume programmes of study immediately being settled and fully aware of the demands and requirements of their courses.

Year 9 will therefore be embarking on their GCSE courses on 14 June 2010 at Holly Walk. We are confident that this early start will give our students a super opportunity to gain the good grades in their GCSE’s that they deserve. They are a bright and able year group and I very much look forward to working with them and yourselves during this next and very important stage in your daughter’s education.

Meanwhile, our students have a busy last few weeks in Year 9. They will be involved in 2 days of exciting skills based project work that will challenge and develop them further as well as the reward of an end of Key Stage 3 visit to Thorpe Park on Friday 11 June 2010.

Yours sincerely

Dear Parent / Carer

I am writing to inform you that we will soon be ‘rolling over’ our timetable. This will mean that our girls will become Year 11 and will begin their Year 11 courses on 14 June 2010.

This will be the fifth year that we have ‘rolled over’ our timetable in June rather than in September and we have seen very real benefits in doing so. Firstly, the additional curriculum time that is spent on GCSE coursework has been extremely valuable and has raised the achievement of all of our students in KS4. We believe that our Year 10 students are ready to begin studying for their GCSE options in June after all of the Key Stage 3 assessment has taken place.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the support your daughter has been given whilst embarking on their GCSE subjects in Year 10. The next stage is crucial to the academic development of your child. From our experience many pupils find even the thought of beginning Year 11 quite stressful because of the implications from their exam results. I would, therefore, encourage you to ensure that your daughter has a dedicated place of study at home and that you encourage open communication; where she takes responsibility for telling you what her workload is like as we progress through the year. This is an opportunity for you to discuss with your daughter the significance of good study habits and the necessity of meeting coursework deadlines.

Even though we now begin Year 11 in June we only have two full terms to complete the GCSE curriculum. You are also aware that your daughter will complete a two week work experience placement in September so it is vital that attendance remains high priority as well as good organisation.

I look forward to continuing to work with you in enabling your daughter’s success. Always feel free to contact me to discuss your daughter’s progress or individual needs.

Yours sincerely

Year 12 Examination and Study Leave

I would like to remind you that Year 12 will begin their study leave on the 14 May 2010 for the external examination period and that the students will be expected back in school on Thursday 17 June 2010. All students will begin working towards A2 when they return. Although the students will be able to drop one of their four subjects they will be expected to continue all four until the results are published on 19 August 2010. A final choice can then be made subject to obtaining a suitable grade.

Year 12 have been informed that candidates for the A2 courses will be expected to obtain the equivalent points score of 4 D grades (120 points) at AS level in order to continue studying 3 A2 subjects. Points are allocated as shown below:

Grade A = 60
Grade B = 50
Grade C = 40
Grade D = 30
Grade E = 20
Grade U = 0

In addition to this most subjects will require a D grade to continue with study for A2.

Students are welcome to use the study facilities provided in school during their study leave, if they prefer and members of staff will be available to help with revision support.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you, as parents, a peaceful exam time and wish the students every success.

Yours sincerely

May I remind you that the A level results will be available from 8.30am on the 19 August 2010. The book return forms have now been distributed to the students and these will need to signed by the respective teachers before the £50 refund can be made available.

Students are welcome to use the study facilities provided in school during the examination period if they prefer and members of staff will be available to help with revision support.

GCSE Geography Fieldwork and Controlled Assessment

As this letter finds you, your daughter will be working hard, revising towards her summer examinations. The 1-hour exam for Geography, on the 14 June, covering the physical Geography topics, is worth 25% towards the final grade attained. As such, revision should now be in full swing, with students producing revision cards and practicing questions and exercises from her textbook.

However, as the Summer Term continues, our attention switches towards the Human elements of the course, and to the Controlled Assessment based upon compulsory fieldwork. You will recall my previous letter about our intention to prepare for the Controlled Assessment, and to complete the compulsory fieldwork at the Juniper Hall Field Study Centre, in Surrey from Friday 15 October until Sunday 17 October inclusive. I have set out a payment schedule below.

Date Payment due
24 May £25
21 June £25
19 July £25

As a result of the visit, students will collect high quality data, specific to the research question set by Edexcel, and be fully briefed as to its significance, including its presentation and analysis. Students will then use this work in the high control series of lessons upon our return. You are reminded that Edexcel limits teacher input into these lessons. The importance of this field visit is therefore clear. Several of the high control lessons, during which students will produce their actual Controlled Assessment task, will be spent at the Central Enfield CLC.

I would be grateful if you could sign and return the reply slip attached, via your daughter, to Mr Smith / Mrs Gredal as soon as possible. Please enclose the first payment of £25.00 (a cheque is preferred, made payable to Enfield County School). Please write your daughter’s name and “GCSE Geography – Juniper Hall” on the back of the cheque or enclose a cash payment. Please put either payment with the permission slip in a clearly labelled envelope. If you have any concerns in relation to the field work assessment please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely

Dear Parent / Carer

Year10 survey Spring 2010, GCSE Science in Year 11

In Year 10 all students at Enfield County are following the AQA GCSE Science B course. When your daughter has completed her GCSE exams in June (see below for the dates of each examination) she will be starting a second GCSE course in Science.

Year 10 examination dates:

 Biology   9 June 2010
 Chemistry  16 June 2010
 Physics  24 June 2010

We would like to know what your daughter would prefer to study for this second GCSE in Science. Please be aware that we cannot guarantee that we will be able to offer the preferred course.

Please read through the options below and choose ONE option that describes the course that your daughter thinks would suit her the best.

If she is thinking of continuing to study Sciences at A level then select A – Additional Science.

A  GCSE Additional Science – this includes more units in Biology, Chemistry and Physics and would give students a second GCSE award in Science. The course prepares students to study any of the Sciences at A level and the internal assessment part of this course will contribute 25% towards the overall grade.

If you are not considering studying Sciences at A level then select A or B

B  GCSE Additional Applied Science – this is a much more vocational course and would give a second GCSE award in Science. It covers content such as food, forensics and sport. This course would not prepare a student to study any of the A level Sciences. The internal assessment part of this course will contribute 60% towards the overall grade. Therefore a strong commitment to independent study and self-motivation are essential.

Please complete the slip below and return it to your Science teacher by Friday 30 April 2010. If you have any concerns in relation to the above please do not hesitate to contact me on 020 8363 3030.

Yours sincerely

Dear Parent / Carer

Year 7 visit to Legoland

It will soon be time for our annual visit to Legoland. In order that the day proceeds with as few problems as possible we would be grateful if you would note the following points.

Students will need to dress appropriately (not school uniform). Legoland is on an exposed site with limited indoor entertainment. Check the likely weather conditions on the day and ensure comfortable shoes / trainers are worn.

We would advise that students do not bring expensive equipment or a lot of money, as staff cannot take responsibility for such items. Most of the activities in Legoland are included in the entry ticket, so girls will only need money for drinks, ice cream, souvenirs etc. £10 would be quite sufficient.

We understand that for your own peace of mind you may prefer your daughter to have a mobile phone. The school has no objection to this but you must accept that we can take no responsibility whatsoever if the phone is lost, damaged or stolen during the trip.

Students should arrive at school at the normal time for registration. The coaches will leave for Legoland at 9.00am.

We anticipate returning at approximately 4.30 p.m. but please note that this time may vary depending on the traffic conditions on the M4 / M25. The coaches will drop off at a convenient and safe point near to the Hop Poles Public House in Lancaster Road. Coaches will not go into Rosemary Avenue.

A packed lunch will be required and those students who are entitled to free school dinners will have a packed lunch supplied by the school.

Although students will be able to explore the park in groups of friends, staff will be on duty at strategic points around the park and Legoland staff will have a mobile number to contact us should any problems arise. All girls must return to the park entrance by 2.50 p.m. at the latest. NB if the coach is delayed leaving the park then the coach company may charge an additional fee, which will be passed on to the latecomers.

If you have any concerns in relation to the above visit to Legoland, please do not hesitate to contact us on 020 8363 9934.

Yours sincerely

Year 9 Day Trip To Thorpe Park – Friday 11 June 2010

I am pleased to inform you that arrangements have been made for Year 9 students to enjoy a day at Thorpe Park as part of the end of Key Stage 3 celebrations on Friday 11 June 2010.

We will be travelling by coach departing from Rosemary Avenue at 8.30am and returning at approximately 7.30pm. Students will be required to bring their own packed lunch and some spending money should they wish. Pre-paid Meals students will be provided with a packed lunch.

In accordance with Health and Safety regulations and the school’s journey policy, students will be under remote supervision and therefore, staff will be available at specified check points within Thorpe Park to support and supervise as necessary. This means the students will be allowed to go around in small groups on their own.

The cost of the visit will be £27.00 inclusive of entry ticket and coach fare. Under the terms of the 1988 Education Act schools are only allowed to ask for a voluntary payment towards extra curricular activities. However this visit can only go ahead if parents are prepared to commit to a voluntary contribution of the amount indicated

If you would like your daughter to participate in this visit, please complete and sign the attached form and return it to Mrs Goulding by Friday 7 May 2010.

Year 13 Profile for Academic Year 2009/10

We are pleased to enclose your daughter’s Profile for Year 13.

Effort Levels

1 }
2 } 1 being the highest and 4 being the lowest
3 }
4 }

Targets/Areas for improvement

Targets or areas for improvement have also been included to support your daughter in the best way forward for each individual subject.

Pastoral Comment

There is also a comment by your daughter’s Form Tutor alongside her attendance and punctuality record for the year. Research has demonstrated the clear link between consistent effort and good attendance through all of the school years and success in examinations.

Please would you sign and complete the slip below acknowledging receipt of your daughter’s profile. If you have any points that you wish to raise about your daughter’s profile, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Penn and she will arrange to discuss any concerns with you.
