ECSfG 'Quote of the Week'Posted on: 12th Oct 2020
“Life is to be lived, not controlled; and humanity is won by continuing to play in face of certain defeat.” Ralph Ellison – Invisible Man
Our quote this week is from Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man.
The novel tells a story of a man invisible, 'simply because people refuse to see me’. Published in 1952 where American society was on the cusp of immense change, we experience the narrator’s adventures from being expelled from a Southern college, to a terrifying race riot in Harlem. The powerful depictions in the novel gives voice to an entire generation of black Americans.
